This project was my submission for the annual istd student assessments 2014. The brief was to tell “everything about one thing”. Students have been supposed to gather a complete knowledge about one single thing and to make that accessible for the public in a final outcome. My subject matter for this brief is number 3.
During my work I have found examples of number 3 in sports, mythology, science, superstition, religion, nature and culture, almost everywhere. Because I wanted to include such a variety of topics, it was necessary to develop a special way of ordering the material. I decided to split the number 3 into three main topics: “the unity of three”, “three in a ratio” and “three in a row”. I dedicated one book to each. The contents of the books are compiled in an associative order. These associative chains became apparent during my research, when I focussed on one detail which led me to the next topic and so on. That is why I expressed the topics in the associative way I discovered them. The playful aspect of my work is represented by the packaging of the three books, which is inspired by slot machines. I came across the idea of the slot machines, because I tried to find something to celebrate the number 3. And slot machines do so, because they have three spinning reels. These triplet combinations can unlock the jackpot. I employed the graphic element of three pink squares to tie in the books’ layouts with the principles of the slot machine. They could be filled with text or pictures, be used as a typographic element within body copy or simply as decoration. These three squares function as signposts, orienting the reader.
